Research Priority Guide: What to Tech First

The research tree covers economy, military, and defense branches at once, and trying to advance all three evenly is usually slower than picking a clear order and sticking to it.

Economy first, almost always

Early on, economic research (gathering speed, resource production, construction speed) pays for itself the fastest, because every later research point gets funded faster once your economy is stronger. Skipping ahead to military tech before your economy is solid usually just means a longer wait for the military tech itself.

Then layer in military as threats appear

Once your economic base is reasonably strong, shift weight toward troop attack, defense, and health research โ€” ideally timed around when you actually start engaging in PvP or events, not before.

Don't neglect defense research

  • Defense-branch research is easy to skip because it's less visible than attack stats, but it directly affects how much a rally against you actually costs the attacker.
  • A well-researched defense discourages casual attacks, which matters more than it seems once your account is developed enough to be a visible target.

Match research to your Furnace level, not the calendar

Research unlocks are gated behind Furnace level the same way buildings are โ€” don't leave a research slot idle because "nothing looks exciting" at your current tier. An idle research queue is one of the most common efficiency losses in the game.

A simple rule of thumb

If you're ever unsure what to research next, default to whichever branch is furthest behind the others. Balanced overall progress tends to serve an account better than a maxed single branch with the others neglected.
